African Police Constable Andrew M'butu's career comes to life in these six related stories, collected here for the first time. The book reads like an episodic novel as M'butu and his unforgettable colleagues--Constable Kobari, the Indian doctor Murmajee, Cadet Inspector Moi and all the rest--careen through a truly original series of exotic adventures.

"It's good to see Walter Satterthwait's African stories so splendidly published. They're a treat, and the author's thoughtful and amusing Afterword is worth the price of admission all by itself."

Lawrence Block

"A delicious cast of characters, criminals, dharma bums, religious cultists, decadent Europeans, wizards and prostitutes gambol through the six compelling mysteries of The Gold of Mayani. But the best of all of them is Andrew M'butu, the efficient, ethical and humane police sergeant who ties these mysteries together. M'butu is a mensch.

Satterthwait combines mystery, pathos, humor and poetry in this rich and evocative book. Along the way, he looks at the mysteries of Kenya, where the tribal and colonial pasts confront modern Africa, and at the lingering mysteries in all lives. It's dandy alchemy, and the result is pure gold."

Watercolor from Super Limited Edition
Watercolor from Super Limited Edition "This beautifully produced volume gathers the six stories avout Sergeant Andrew M'butu from the 1980s issues of Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Magazine. The African background is nicely handled, especially the interaction of African and European characters, and the plots are often complex enough to support novel length."

John L. Breen, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine

"The Gold of Mayani is an aptly titled collection. Walter Satterthwait's stories featuring Kenyan police sergeant Andrew M'butu and his assistant, Constable Cobari, are the genuine 24-karat article."
